• Recognizing our Footwear Family with Five Anniversaries

By Diana on Monday, August 25, 2014

    Dansko_anniversaries_post.jpg -

At Dansko, we believe the best kind of business success happens in a positive, rewarding workplace environment. Because our employees develop a sense of belonging in this community, they tend to stick around. The result: many anniversaries to celebrate!

Why do we recognize anniversaries, you may wonder?

For starters, we never need an excuse to have fun. That’s a given. But we celebrate our co-workers because we understand that Dansko is bigger than ourselves. The decisions we make don’t just affect our individual role, or our particular department; they affect the company as a whole.

    So, how do we celebrate?

We always begin by sharing a meaningful gift that tells a piece of our story. For five-year anniversaries, we give employees a ceramic bowl handcrafted by a local artisan; for ten years, we give an elegant-yet-classic watch; and for 15 years, we give a platter made of 100% recyclable materials. Sometimes touching or humorous poems accompany these gifts, while other times co-workers present thoughtful tributes. Regardless of the method, we make sure our employees feel valued and appreciated for serving Dansko.

Recently, we recognized the anniversary of five Dansko employees. Each received a thoughtful (and in some cases, hilarious) tribute as they accepted their gift. We caught up with three of these employees to learn more about their passion for Dansko.

    Jamey M., Finance
    15 years of service
“A lot has changed at Dansko since my journey began, yet there is a consistency about our culture that remains, which is why I am extremely proud to belong to an organization that cares about people and their community. At Dansko, we treat one another like family, working under with the mentality that we’re in this to succeed together.”

    Jess B., Accounts Receivable
    15 years of service
“Watching Dansko’s growth from 19 employees to more than 170 has been such an incredible experience. Though Dansko symbolizes my ‘work life,’ its values and beliefs have molded a path for my personal life, too. I never want to leave this wonderful, healthy, happy environment, built by the finest family of professionals!”

    Nate B., Customer Service
    10 years of service
“At Dansko, I have learned to think outside the box. I use this philosophy on a daily basis to ensure that our customers receive the best customer service experience possible.”

  • Summer Days at Dansko: A Dip & Dessert BBQ Spectacular

By Nick on Wednesday, July 30, 2014

    BBQ_SummerDays.jpg -

On a warm and breezy July afternoon, seated on the patio of our state-of-the-art distribution center, we indulged in a variety of dips and desserts – from homemade salsa to cannoli dip to everything in between! Although this “foodie paradise” represents a common occurrence at Dansko, the event offered a new take on our typical food gatherings.

This time, Dansko employees brought their favorite recipes as part of our first-ever “Dip and Dessert” day. While a team of grillmasters served up delicious hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers, we filled our plates with sides from the tastiest potluck in Southeastern Pennsylvania. And then we ate.

When we finally stopped eating, a thought came to mind: why not share something great and pass along three of our favorite recipes? Below, we offer something salty, something sweet and, in typical Dansko fashion, something local. Eat up! We hope you enjoy.

      Jerry’s Spicy Pretzel Bits
      Ingredients:
      • Bag of sourdough pretzels
      • 1 packet of ranch dressing powder mix
      • 1 cup of oil (vegetable or canola)
      • 1 ½ teaspoons of garlic powder
      • Red pepper flakes

Directions: Partially open the bag of pretzels and break the contents into small pieces, making sure to avoid poking holes in the bag. Mix ranch packet, oil and garlic powder. Pour mix into bag and shake. After pretzels are covered with the mix, spread the pieces onto a cookie sheet. Sprinkle red pepper flakes over the pretzel pieces. Bake at 300 degrees for seven minutes.

      Christina’s Out-Of-This-World Peach Pie
      Ingredients for the crust:
      • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
      • 1 teaspoon salt
      • ¼ cup cold water
      • 1 cup (2 sticks) of chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Combine all ingredients and mix with a dough hook or blend in food processor and knead by hand. Divide dough in half and chill each for 30 minutes.

      Ingredients for the filling:
      • 3lbs of peaches cut into quarter-inch slices
      • 3 tablespoons of cornstarch
      • ¼ tsp of salt
      • ¾ cup of sugar
      • Juice of one lemon

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Fit pie crusts to 12-inch plate. Chill pie crusts for 30 minutes. Spoon peaches into chilled crust mounding in the center; add lattice top. Chill entire pie for another 20-30 minutes. Place pie dish on parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes on 400 until crust is golden, and then turn heat down to 350 and bake for another 40-50 minutes.

      • ¼ cup chopped red onion

      • ½ tsp. onion powder
      • Fresh chopped dill, about ¼ cup or to taste (another community garden special!)
      • Squeeze of ½ lemon
      • Cayenne Pepper—a couple of shakes or to taste (optional)

Directions: Blend all of the ingredients together and refrigerate for several hours to allow flavors to blend. Serve with your crackers of choice.

  • Summer Days at Dansko: Team Day 2014

By Nick on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

    TeamDay-01.jpg -

From tossing bean bags to snacking on kettle corn to catching up with friends, we never miss an opportunity to have fun at Dansko. So, when our annual “Team Day” arrived, we took full advantage.

The main event—a bean-bag toss tournament—drew participants from each of our various departments. And though the competition grew fierce, and new rivalries developed, the tournament helped strengthen company-wide friendships.

After crowning a pair of champions, employees participated in a variety of other activities, from wiffle ball to volleyball to Dansko-ized bingo. Along the way, they enjoyed the opportunity to spend time outdoors, on our campus, beside our blooming community garden.

This week, we caught up with three tournament participants to hear a little more about their day—and about the activities they’re looking forward to this summer.

    • Summer Days at Dansko: Team Day 2014 -

      Marco I., Distribution Center
“Team Day was a blast this year. Of course, my highlight was the bean-bag tournament. It was an intense game, and after coming in second this year, my teammate Mike and I will look forward to a rematch next summer. Away from Dansko, I can’t wait to head into the city to support my hometown Philadelphia Phillies.”

    • Summer Days at Dansko: Team Day 2014 -

      Wendy C., Operations
“Team Day is all about the Dansko community coming together, eating food and relaxing. And although I wanted to win the bean-bag tournament, I eventually became a spectator and discovered how passionately I wanted my colleagues to win. This year, I’m looking forward to summer nights and cookouts with my family. My husband always makes tasty burgers on the grill!”

    • Summer Days at Dansko: Team Day 2014 -

      Bo P., Information Technology
“Team Day reminded me of a weekend barbecue with my friends and family; holding the event outdoors left room for everyone to find an enjoyable activity. As summer continues, I’m most looking forward to one pastime: a round of golf without any shanks (fore!).”

How will you spend your summer 2014? Whether you toss bean bags or eat delicious barbecue, we hope you soak up some fun during the summer season.

  • Celebrating Employee Ownership with a Little Competition (And a LOT of Laughter!)

By Nick on Monday, March 24, 2014

    ESOP1.jpg -

As a 100% employee owned company, we have much to celebrate (and we confess that our celebrations typically involve food). Recently, the second anniversary of becoming 100% employee owned had an all-new twist.

Although we take our jobs seriously, and take pride in serving as employee owners, we also like to have fun. So, how did we celebrate this anniversary?

With a company-wide game show, of course! Our Dansko rendition of a popular game show required nine co-workers to don jolly personalities  on-stage as the rest of the company was divided into two teams competing against each other to answer questions about being employee owned.  The first team to complete the human tic-tac-toe board won.

Officially, the O’s took home the win but we all walked away from the celebration having learned a new thing or two about our role as employee owners… and we all enjoyed the food!

As employee owners, we are committed to furthering the Dansko legacy of quality products, partner-focused service, community involvement, and environmental stewardship – a promise for today, tomorrow and generations to come.
